| Australia’s Top Dog Trainers Fast Forward
Learning Skills! |
Dr Robert Robert
Holmes - BVM&S PhD MRCVS FACVS
Imagine your boss telling you you’re doing a great job – so good that next year you’ll get exactly the same wage (reward) as you got this year. What? Not happy Jan!
If all that’s on offer is the ‘same’ reward – are you going to have any interest or incentive to work harder or do better? No way.
It’s the same with our dogs – keep giving the same reward and you’ll get the same performance… and just one of many fascinating ideas about 300 of us were asked to consider while attending the
NDTF (National Dog Trainers’ Federation) Dog Behaviour & Training National Conference which was held over 3 days in mid-March at Sydney’s Darling Harbour Convention Centre.
The event was a true who’s who in the world of dog training and behaviour – the key speaker being the extraordinary Steven Lindsay whose 3 Text books are acknowledged world-wide as THE guide to dog training and behaviour and who rarely travels outside of his native US.
Incidentally – Steven kept the audience enthralled with his sessions which included the ethics and philosophy of our partnership with dogs (sounds heavy but it wasn’t) as well as practical dog-handling tips and techniques. His tip for keeping our dogs happy and motivated? Order and variety. i.e. some predictability with loads of surprises!
Dogs who get to experience things that are better than they expected or even worse than expected go into ‘learning mode’ and enjoy life more because it’s no longer dull. After all, as Steve says “dogs gave up the fun of having to track and hunt food for survival so that they could do all the jobs we humans wanted them for – so we owe it to modern dogs to teach them how to control the impulses that annoy us while helping them learn how to find happiness in other activities’.
We’re still hopeful that we will get an interview with Steven Lindsay for our listeners at a later time via phone as he was regrettably but understandably exhausted at the end of the 3 days of lectures – so in the meantime Kaye asked one of the other key speakers, veterinary behaviourist Dr Robert Holmes PhD to give us his thoughts on Steven Lindsay’s remarkable insights... including some of the more controversial topics such as ‘aversives’ or ‘corrections’ for dogs.

| Is Your Dog’s Bad Behaviour Actually Being
Caused By A Medical Condition Which Can Be Fixed? |
Dr Robert Robert
Holmes - BVM&S PhD MRCVS FACVSc.
Our next podcast with Veterinary Behaviourist Dr Robert Holmes is based on the lecture he delivered to the NDTF conference in which he reveals how easy it is to mistake the true cause of certain bad behaviours in dogs – and what we can do to determine if a problem is truly behavioural or medical.

| Dramatic Changes In The World Of Dog Breeding! |
Associate Professor Dr Paul McGreevy, BVSc,
PhD, MRCVS, MACVS (Animal Welfare), Cert CABC, Grad Cert Higher Ed.
RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine

There are dramatic changes happening in the world of dog-breeding as a result of the Bateson inquiry which was set up as a direct result of the controversial documentary
‘Pedigree Dogs Exposed’.
University of Sydney Veterinary School Associate Professor Paul McGreevy told dog trainers at the NDTF conference that as of now, Australia is lagging behind several foreign nations who’ve adopted new breed standards which will see future dog generations enjoy dramatically better health and well-being.
He spoke with us moments before taking the stage…

Petfoods
ARE Getting Better! There’s a brand new ‘special ingredient’ in certain new generation premium petfoods which is going to make pets who eat it feel better, live longer and save you money! Now regular listeners know that we here at Pet Talk Radio always view health claims with an equally healthy dose of scepticism! But this time – it appears that the evidence for choosing petfood which includes
PRE-biotics (as opposed to PRO-biotics) has some very strong and sound independent scientific evidence to back up those claims. To find out more, we caught up with veterinarian & nutrition guru Dr Danielle Haack – who’s committed to educating pet owners that feeding a better quality of food to their pets will pay off
big-time in having healthier pets who’ll live longer (and produce tinier poos!) |
