Savannah cats.... Sounds like something you’d hear about in the southern states of the USA… but in fact they’re pussycats. Very, very large cats about twice the size of your usual moggy.
Savannahs are a cross between an African wild cat called a Serval and a domestic cat – and right now there are several in American quarantine awaiting permission to arrive in Australia.
Fans say they’re super-friendly and more like a dog than a cat – and that the combination of their high price and strict breeding guidelines will ensure they don’t run loose or breed randomly.
Opponents say we’re importing certain disaster – among them Pet Talk Radio’s native wildlife expert – Mark Richmond from Crocodile Encounters.
Mark joins us to talk about the Savannah cat and the problems of introducing exotic species in this segment.
