OUT FOR WINTER!

really is blessed with great weather most of the year round but just
like humans our pets do feel any extremes in temperature.
That's why it really is best to keep them indoors during the winter
months but if that isn't possible then do make sure they have adequate
protection. Their 'outdoor home' needs to be insulated and have some
kind of door to keep out the chilly winds or rain and in some areas to
keep out ice and snow. It's always a good idea to elevate the kennel to
prevent water or dampness seeping into bedding.
If you live in a snowy region, then you will have to organise some means
of ensuring your dog's water supply doesn't freeze. And frankly, if it's
that cold - then bring the dog indoors!
Food requirements change in winter as well. Outdoor dogs will need to
eat more to keep them warm, while indoor pets who aren't exercising as
much as usual should get slightly less food to avoid the springtime
blimp look. (And yes, we humans have to worry about our food intake as
well!)
A final thought, on chilly days or in wet weather, do double check that
your dog hasn't crawled under a car looking for shelter or warmth from
the car engine or exhaust. A quick look could prevent one of the most
common driveway tragedies.
A personal note:
And while we're on the topic of animals seeking shelter�if you
suspect rodents are trying to muscle in on your property, do be
extremely careful about the placement of rat poison.
In the past week my father's dog Kasey
gave the family a scare after polishing off some poison bait in my
brother's garage. Luckily my brother spotted Casey finishing off her
POTENTIALLY FATAL TREAT and she was rushed to the Vet� just-in-time!
